TYPOGRAPHIC DETAILING - NEWSPAPER DESIGN - RESEARCH
Brief
The International Society of Typographic Designers has asked me to design a typographic work that explores the subject of ‘fads’. Fads can heavily effect our culture and lifestyle and weave in and out of our routines.

Solution
The Bandwagon is a conceptual newspaper which explores the subject of fads through expressive type and relevant content. I identified a fad life cycle that emerges, surges and purges through out popular culture and I therefore used typographic elements such as sensational headlines and expressive type to mimic these three stages of the fad life cycle.

As part of the ISTD assessment students are asked to submit a full specification of outcomes. This meant attention to detail needed to be outstanding.  As the newspaper progresses the typography becomes more erratic and uncontrollable whilst the content also reflects a fad in it’s surging phase. I was lucky enough to be selected for the D&AD New Blood exhibition in June 2017. Inspired by traditional newsagents, throughout the exhibition I kept pasting up headlines from my newspaper onto a board. It became a bit of a performance piece and industry loved it as it grabbed everyone's attention.
I was honoured to be awarded a pass for my submission and membership into ISTD.
"A very well researched project with a comprehensive analysis of the subject matter, the format and the functional aspects of the solution. The process of engagement with the user is clearly explored, for example the omission of other copy has effectively highlighted your selected fad articles. The use of the newspaper format to echo the lifespan of your subject material is an appropriate consideration. The problems of word spacing in narrow column justified text is standard newspaper practice yet this has been effectively utilised within the overall design concept and layout."
Thank you to everyone who helped me with this achievement!
